Beyond the Basics: Advanced Techniques for How to Roll a Blunt

Written byBen Anderson on February 16, 2024

16% of Americans said they smoked marijuana in 2022. This number has been increasing for years and is likely to continue as recreational marijuana becomes legal in more states.

The growing presence of cannabis and cannabis use has raised a lot of questions for some. One such question is how to roll a blunt. While there are any number of unique cannabis products on the market, some of us still prefer to do things the old-fashioned way.

It turns out that rolling blunts does take a fair bit of skill, and you can even find different ways of doing it. We'll discuss a few of them here.

What Is a Blunt?

You've probably heard the term 'blunt' at some point in your life, but what are they exactly? Some people think they're the same as a joint or a cigarette, but they're not.

A blunt is comparable to a cigar. They're thicker than a weed joint and often stiffer. They get their name from a type of cigar made by the Phillies Company. Back in the 1980s and 90s, when marijuana started to find popularity among hip-hop artists and other celebrities, people often hollowed out cigars and filled them with marijuana.

Papers

Whether you buy cigars and hollow them out, or get commercial rolling papers, blunts need to be rolled in cigar papers. Otherwise, they're not really blunts. If you know how to roll a blunt but need more papers, we can help.

If you want to go super traditional, you can skip the rolling papers altogether and roll your cigars up in a tobacco leaf.

You can even get rolling papers made from hemp fibers. These papers are sweeter, better for the environment, and burn more slowly than traditional rolling papers.

Rolling a Blunt: Supplies

You'll need a few supplies before you're ready to roll a blunt, although what supplies depends on your personal process. For instance, if you're buying rolling papers, you don't need a knife. If you're buying cigars and emptying them, you will need a knife to cut into the cigar.

You also have the option of buying pre-ground cannabis, or cannabis flower, that you grind yourself. For the latter, you'll need a grinder.

Finally, there's the crutch, which can be made from either glass or cardboard. The crutch goes near the mouth end of the blunt and acts as a filter. It also makes the blunt much easier to hold. Crutches are optional, though. You could just twist both ends like people have done for years.

Rolling a Blunt: The Process

Once you've gathered your supplies, you're ready to roll a blunt. Take note of what you're using, as that may change the process.

1. Grind the Cannabis and Soften the Papers

If you've purchased flowers rather than pre-ground cannabis, you'll need to grind your cannabis down. Your goal is to grind your cannabis into very small pieces, but not so small that it's powdery.

You can make things better early on by softening your rolling papers with a damp towel. Remember to not make it too damp, as you don't want the papers to rip.

2. Make or Add the Crutch, if You Wish

The next step is to add a crutch if you're using one. If you've bought a crutch, this should be a simple step. If you haven't, you can make one out of a piece of cardboard. Fold it over a few times until it resembles an accordion and put it at the end of the blunt where you inhale. It should act as a filter.

If you don't wish to use a crutch, twist both ends to keep the cannabis from falling out.

3. Load the Blunt

Whether you're smoking a blunt, a joint, or adding some tobacco and making a spliff, the trick is to spread the ground cannabis evenly. Keep in mind that nobody's perfect. You won't get it exactly right the first time or even the fiftieth, but you will get close enough to be great at it.

There are exceptions to this rule, with one of the major ones being cone joints. You've probably seen a cone joint, even if you've never heard of one. It's what many of us think of when we think of a joint. Instead of being evenly distributed, the cannabis is loaded towards the front, so the joint narrows towards the mouth end.

4. Rolling a Blunt

Once you've put in everything you're going to add, pinch the paper between your fingers and roll it back and forth a few times. Once you've got your blunt in a cigar shape, put the unglued end of the rolling paper beneath the glued end around the weed.

Finally, lick the glued section of the rolling paper and seal the blunt. The blunt should be tight and thick.

5. Finishing Touches

Once you've finished sealing the blunt, tap it on a surface to keep the contents from moving around. The only thing left to do is light your blunt.

When lighting your blunt, light the twisted end briefly. This should cause it to burn slowly and evenly, allowing you to enjoy a better smoke for longer.

Try Adding Wax

Many smokers try to enhance their cannabis experience by adding a cannabis wax concentrate. This causes the blunt to have a bit more flavor and to burn slower.

Concentrate wax often adds more THC, which makes for a better experience.

Storage

You probably don't want to have to repeat the process of rolling a new blunt every time you want to light up, so you're probably going to store a few if you can. You need to store blunts in a cool, dry place, such as a cupboard or in your fridge.
